Day-by-Day Progression
On a clear day, enjoy spectacular aerial views of Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Mt. Jumolhari, and Jichu Drake during your flight to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro Airport, meet our representative and transfer to Thimphu (1.5-hour drive) through scenic valleys and rocky landscapes.
After breakfast, take a 1-hour hike to Chagri Monastery, built in 1619 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Enjoy the scenic walk through temperate forests of oak and rhododendron, with stunning views from the monastery.
After breakfast, visit Simtokha Dzong, then drive through Dochula Pass (3,150m) to enjoy Himalayan views and see the 108 stupas. Continue through scenic forests and subtropical landscapes, stopping for lunch en route. After lunch, take a 20-minute walk through rice terraces to visit Chimi Lhakhang, the renowned Temple of Fertility. Overnight: Punakha.
After breakfast, enjoy a 4-hour drive back to Paro, crossing Dochula Pass. Stop for lunch in Thimphu before continuing to Paro. In the afternoon, visit Rinpung Dzong, a 16th-century fortress that serves as the administrative and religious center of Paro District. Built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, it’s a fine example of Bhutanese architecture. Overnight in Paro.
After breakfast, embark on a pilgrimage hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), Bhutan’s iconic sacred site, choosing between a 2-hour hike to the café viewpoint or a 5-hour hike to the monastery itself, with horse rides to the café available at an additional cost. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche arrived here on a tigress and meditated for three months, while the temple was built in 1692 by Tenzin Rabgye. After lunch, visit Kichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, built in the 7th century to subdue a demoness. Overnight in Paro.
